21 Curatorial Practices in Music;

The word ‘curator’ crops up ever more often in the world of music. Curators devise playlists or programme festivals, conceive special projects or work with care institutions. Many interpretations of the role are possible so it seems no one any longer knows precisely what it involves. Too often, we get used to roles and terms being around without clarifying what they mean or what they enable us to do.

We want to be conscious about the music curator and reflect on its potential and capabilities to find new ways to organise music, not as an outside character but as being deeply informed by music practices.

We see the need to define and readjust this important role that grew unchecked over the years. We analyse and reflect on the role of the music curator with two distinct focuses organised in a programme each: ‘Defining your vision’ and ‘Curatorial Leadership and Management.’ The investigation ranges from discursively exploring one’s practice to developing skills for the project’s logistical and strategic aspects. We test our understanding of music curators by practising with guest speakers, fellow students, and lecturers towards formulating our new visions for music programme proposals or project plans that show what a music curator today can be.
